Johnny 0:05

Yeah, Sometimes it'll make really weird and sometimes really cool. I made up for Christmas. My mom really likes pigs and really likes flamingos. It was a pig flamingo hybrid creature and it was so creepy. She loves it. She's got it like, framed all over her house.

Andy 0:22

Boomers and AI art are just an interesting combination. I burned down the equivalent of 12 acres of rainforest just to make you this picture. Hello, and welcome to episode 226 of the erasable podcast. Along with my co host, Johnny Gamber. I am Andy Welfle on hosting duties tonight. Our other third in the trio, Tim is real busy, so it's been hard to kind of like nail him down, but he has some stuff going on. So we were like, you know, instead of letting this go another week and maybe just like finding reasons to not record, we're like, let's just do a short episode. So you're stuck with just the two of us today. Yeah. So how you doing, Johnny?

Johnny 1:07

Stuff. I'm doing well.

Andy 1:08

Yeah.

Johnny 1:09

Piles of stuff that's gone. I'm very happy.

Andy 1:11

Yeah. How are you? Lots of new stuff. Yeah, man. If we don't talk about it now, then maybe we'll get scooped.

Johnny 1:17

Yeah. And there might be even, like, more cool stuff out.

Andy 1:21

Exactly.

Johnny 1:22

Because that's what happened a lot. I'm not complaining.

Andy 1:26

Yeah. So, yeah, things are getting hot out here in San Francisco. It was pretty, pretty warm today and over in Baltimore. Yeah, Johnny. No, actually it was like. It was like in the 70s today for a little bit, so.

Johnny 1:38

Oh, it's.

Andy 1:39

That's hot for San Francisco. We don't even. We don't have A.C. usually around here. And Johnny, you've had your A.C. on today, right?

Johnny 1:45

I've been on for a month.

Andy 1:47

Oh, man, I didn't realize.

Johnny 1:49

I'm like, no, I'm not doing that.

Andy 1:50

Yeah. No, I don't blame you.

Johnny 1:52

Today I had my windows open for two hours and then like, I could feel it getting sticky.

Andy 1:57

Yeah. It's funny, one of the things in our household. My girlfriend is Canadian and one of the things that we are. We cannot communicate on is temperature. Like, she's on Celsius and I'm on Fahrenheit. And like, it's. It's gotten to the. Like, it's gotten. It's really hard to, like, guesstimate between them. You have to do some, like, complicated math. So that's been interesting. Like, if. If she's like, what's the temperature out? And I'm like, looking. I'm like 65. She was like, that means nothing to me. So I'm getting better. I'm like, I think that's about 16, 16 and a half. Yeah. So, yeah, let's. Let's get into it. We have a few tools of the trade, and then, yeah, we have some cool field notes things. Some cool Blackwing things to talk about and just kind of see what else happens. So, Johnny, do you want to jump into some tools of the trade? Oh, real quick. I should remind you. So if you are a Patreon member at any level, you are probably you. If you're not, you could be seeing a video of us talking. You can see our lovely faces and usually try to hold up the stuff we're talking about. So if you're a Patreon member, you have that. We have some other interesting Patreon perks that just came along last week that I will mention a little late in the episode. But, yeah. So we are obviously recording audio. This is a podcast, after all. But also, like, come check out our video if you're on Patreon at any level at all.

Johnny 3:15

Both rocking some stubble.

Andy 3:17

Oh, yeah, mine is. Mine is more than stubble, but it doesn't look like it. It is poor.

Johnny 3:21

I'm not wearing my glasses.

Andy 3:23

Okay. Your face is dirty, Andy.

Johnny 3:29

So my. I didn't realize that. So Henry was, like, mega into Star wars. And then, you know, I remembered how much I liked it when I was little. We watched all the Star wars stuff, but sort of fell off in the last few weeks or months back into Harry Potter. But then, like, Henry, you've seen the first season of Andor, like, you want to watch that, and we've been, like, binging the crap out of it.

Andy 3:50

Andor is so good. Like, I don't understand. Well, I understand why it took a year and a half or however long it took to make the second season. But, like, I don't, like, the writing is just so much better than any other Star Wars.

Johnny 4:02

Yeah. Like, I feel like in Star wars, like, Alec Guinness was in it, but he wasn't good. He wasn't. Yeah. Yeah. Because.

Andy 4:10

Because the writing was crappy.

Johnny 4:11

Like, and now, like, Stellan Skarsgard's in it. Like, so menacing, but also, like, giddy and, like, yeah, perfect.

Andy 4:18

Yeah. No, it's. It's. It's so good. I remember watching it just be like, oh, well, I remember I really liked Rogue One, and I thought it was, like, just interesting when they got away from the typical Star wars story. And when I was like, oh, it's a prequel to Rogue One. I was just like. But it's just so much more than even that.

Johnny 4:34

So, yeah, like five minutes in the first episode, I'm like, oh, my God.

Andy 4:38

Yeah.

Johnny 4:39

So I haven't seen season two yet. I was waiting till it was finished because I know I'm gonna binge like crazy.

Andy 4:44

Yeah.

Johnny 4:44

And so do you pay attention to the emails from. I guess Jim Kudall writes them from field notes called Staple Day, I think.

Andy 4:52

Yeah.

Johnny 4:53

Sometimes he mentioned a novel that came out last year and won the Booker prize called Orbital that he mentions. The less you know about it, the better. And like, I agree. So I would say it's short and it's pretty and it's so good you.

Andy 5:09

You read it.

Johnny 5:10

I'm reading it in, like, small rations of like an hour. Like, oh, I want to fit it, but it's short, so I'll just finish the whole thing. And I don't want to yet, but now I have the new book that we talk about later, so I might just finish the rest of it tonight.

Andy 5:25

Oh, nice. Yeah.

Johnny 5:27

But yeah, it's like. It's perfect. Everything I've ever read that won the Booker Prize was good. Not necessarily so with the Pulitzer, but,

Andy 5:34

yeah, Pulitzer is important. Booker is good.

Johnny 5:38

And so our local. One of our local news organizations won a Pulitzer recently.

Andy 5:43

Oh, wow.

Johnny 5:43

Baltimore banner. Which is cool.

Andy 5:45

Oh, nice.

Johnny 5:46

Baltimore. Yeah, they weren't reporting on anything good about Baltimore.

Andy 5:49

They were talking about it's not good.

Johnny 5:52

Opioid problems. But we also just had our lowest murder rate on record last month. Five. That's.

Andy 5:57

Congratulations. Congratulations. Yeah. Yeah.

Johnny 6:00

So, yeah. Lots more things to talk about later. So I am using a cool pen. It's a true writer from Levenger in Sapphire mosaic. So they describe it as being a mosaic of black, natural and blue. But it's beautiful black. It's not actually sapphire, but it's pretty. And of course, I have diamond sapphire blue in it. And all day I've been using a really small General Chess scoring 80 that now I can't find because it's really small, but it's perfection.

Andy 6:32

Yeah.

Johnny 6:32

And I got a new planner because I don't know if folks pay attention to the bullet journal thing, but, like, they're changing the way that the paid website is structured. So a lot of people are like, why do I even do this? And I realized that I don't do it as just a to do list in the middle of my journal. So I'm going to try, which is blue, as it were.

Andy 6:51

How structured is it? Does it have, like. Like time Slots or is it just days or weeks?

Johnny 6:55

It's from Leuchtturm. They call it weeks or weekly or they call it the Weekend Notebook. It's the week on one side and stock grid on the other. So it's really simple. So I just have a nice to do list and then, you know, appointments. Such as I have appointments. Yeah.

Andy 7:13

Yeah.

Johnny 7:13

Nice. Yeah, that's my ramble. How about you?

Andy 7:17

I was. I had to go back and look at the last episode and see what I was talking about then, but have not moved on to any new books since then. And a lot of it is because my brain has like so been occupied with. So the week we recorded last I had. I was giving a conference talk in San Francisco. And lately the last few weeks I've been writing another conference talk which I'm going to be giving in London in a few weeks. And I like, I feel like when I'm writing like a talk like that it just like takes over my brain and I'm just so exhausted by the end of it that like, between that and work, I'm just like, have no room for like adding like interesting media to my brain. So most of the stuff I've been consuming media wise has just been like disassociating like YouTube videos. But I have been watching. There's a. There's a really fun anime series on Netflix called Cells at Work. Have you heard of this? It's. It basically interprets cells in your body as like little characters in an anime. So there's like a bunch of like red blood cells that have like little hats and they, they like scurry around through like taking tanks of oxygen to other cells. There's like your white blood cells which are just like these warriors that like come in and just like massacre like the bad, bad viruses.

Johnny 8:35

Oh, that's cool. It's not like voiceover, like Fight Club.

Andy 8:38

No. Yeah. It's told through the eyes of one of the red blood cells. And he's just like trying to do his job and deliver oxygen. But there's all this. There was like a series that was a little bit more kid education oriented. And then there's a new series that came out, I think the last couple of years that's like in a body that's like really hard on itself, like an alcoholic. And at some point this, this body gets like a venereal disease. And like there's, there's a lot. Like first they talk about like the, like they have to. All the red blood cells have to congregate down down below because they're trying to, like, get an erection, and then they finally accomplish that, and then all of a sudden it lets in all of these, like, these, like, terrible viruses, these monster viruses. That's venereal disease.

Johnny 9:26

And so.

Andy 9:26

Yeah, and there's, like, it's going through balding. Like, it's going like this. This body's having a rough time, and it's a little bit more gritty. So, yeah, it's. It's. It's fun. It's very accurate in sort of like how the biology works, if the biology were all a bunch of little anime characters speaking in Japanese. So it's pretty good. Mostly been doing that and then working on conference talks. But, yeah, like you. I'm going to binge andor when it comes out, going to be on a plane in a couple weeks for about 10 hours and going to London. So I'm going to probably watch it on the plane. Yeah. And I want to watch that. And I also want to watch the new season of Doctor who, so I'm not quite sure which I'll watch first or maybe I'll alternate.

Johnny 10:09

Yeah, you have two trips.

Andy 10:10

Yeah. Yeah. But, man, that Disney app is going to be just cranking. Yeah. And besides that, I have been writing. Well, one of the pencils I've been using the last couple days, I will not talk about. Because we'll talk about it later. But I also have the new. I've never owned a lamy ballpoint, so I'm holding this up, and it's this really pretty, kind of like, light metallic blue. They call it denim, but that, to me is, like, lighter than I would think denim is. And the, like, very signature lammy, like, like, grip, triangular grip is in this, like, translucent orange plastic that reminds me of. Do you ever use, like. Do you ever play with legos in the 90s? The 80s and 90s, when they had, like, the visors were like, different translucent plastic and there's like an antenna that you put on your ship or whatever. Yeah, it just reminds me of that, which is exactly the reason I bought it. So it writes. It writes pretty good. It's very smooth. I mean, it's a ballpoint, so it's not, like, super smooth and flowy. I mean, it's a lammy, so it's not smooth anyway.

Johnny 11:08

But it's. It's probably smoother than the fountain pen.

Andy 11:10

Yeah, I'm sure it is. They do also have fountain pens like this. And I. I might either get the one that's in this color. Are the One that's in like a dark, dark purple with like a fluorescent yellow grip.

Johnny 11:21

Oh, I like that one.

Andy 11:22

Yeah. Which is a really good color. But yeah, I, I mostly like, I'll. I have like a couple lammies and I like to buy them because of the colors. Like I have an iconic yellow one. Then I also have like this green one that's a really good color. This is my, my green safari. So yeah, I mostly. Yeah, they write fine. Mostly I just buy them for the colors and this one is no exception.

Johnny 11:44

So I'm just so I missed petrol.

Andy 11:48

Oh yeah.

Johnny 11:48

2017.

Andy 11:50

Oh, wasn't that like a big drama thing?

Johnny 11:52

Like I think the ink was. Yeah, the ink was gorgeous.

Andy 11:57

Yeah. I sort of remember Brad like talking about like he got like the official wine from Lammy or something like this and talking about it in his podcast.

Johnny 12:05

Oh, I forgot to check that.

Andy 12:06

That was like, okay, look for that.

Johnny 12:08

201718 fountain pens. I'm like,

Andy 12:14

yeah, cool.

Johnny 12:16

That is.

Andy 12:16

That's my fresh points. You want to jump into some of the tools of the trade stuff, talk about our abilities.

Johnny 12:21

So lots of field note stuff. So before that you want to talk about the Blackwing labs.

Andy 12:27

Yeah.

Johnny 12:27

Probably not showing up.

Andy 12:29

So I'll hold it up because I, I'm not blurring my background. So. Yeah.

Johnny 12:33

Yay. Thank you. When was this? I was trying to do an Instagram reel and edit it and I'm an idiot and I couldn't do it. But that day I was using a silver verithin to write on some black handmade paper that I was working on a custom book for. And then these came out like, ah, that's so awesome. Because I'm on my last verathan. It's like we.

Andy 12:52

Yeah.

Johnny 12:52

At this point. But they're. I don't know, I just grabbed them. They're really pretty. They're all black except for the top 2/3 which is silver or gold. But it's.

Andy 13:02

Yeah.

Johnny 13:03

So it's not stupid looking. It looks really good. Yeah. Plus I feel like when they came out with the non photo blue and the red ones, I'm like, oh, that's awesome. It's like something different, like really useful. And they didn't. They sell out and they're going to redo them.

Andy 13:17

Yeah, I think they accidentally oversold. I actually really appreciated their email because they were pretty. Just open about that and they're like, yeah, we oversold, but we're going to do another run. And so I'm pretty sure I ordered these before. Well, obviously I did because I got the Shipment. So, yeah, I. So I got the. I got the pencils, and then I also ordered the notebook just because I really, just really like the idea. So they released a lab notebook to go with it that is. That has black pages for you to write in it. And it looks pretty good. My girlfriend just likes to kind of like, doodle and draw, and she was kind of playing around with it. So if you. If you can see this, there's just like some gold and silver accents, and she just drew, like, little things and. Yeah, it shows up. Shows up really well in this black paper. It's. It's almost like construction paper. It's pretty toothy.

Johnny 14:04

Cool.

Andy 14:05

Yeah.

Johnny 14:07

Awesome. So I won't talk about the other ones because you have them in hand, but.

Andy 14:11

Oh, yeah.

Johnny 14:12

Did you get a black wing summer tote?

Andy 14:16

I did not.

Johnny 14:17

So I guess.

Andy 14:18

Wait, there was a blackwing summer tote. No. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Johnny 14:22

Like a week before Mother's Day, they were like, hey, where Made this field notes tote.

Andy 14:26

And they look really good. Yeah.

Johnny 14:28

And I clicked through. I'm like, oh, man, this is gonna be 50 bucks. But, like, it was 25 bucks for, like, the bag and the notebook, which is super cheap.

Andy 14:38

I am swimming in tote bags. So I. Especially with all these conferences I've been going to. Like, there's so many tote bags.

Johnny 14:44

Mine keep getting stolen by kids.

Andy 14:46

So it's good to get another. Yeah, it's great. I really. I really like that. Just that flower color on it. Like.

Johnny 14:52

Yeah.

Andy 14:53

What do they do? They replace the O and notes with. It's like the center of, like a daisy or something.

Johnny 14:58

I think it's a sunflower.

Andy 15:00

Sunflower. Yeah.

Johnny 15:01

I'm not very good with flowers, but they did suggested uses on the back, which was like, the coolest thing on the top, like, storing other tote bags.

Andy 15:09

Oh, fine. I mean, that's. I have a tote bag to store. All the damn tote bags I have.

Johnny 15:14

Every time I go get my big tote bag, it's full of other tote bags.

Andy 15:19

It's sort of like back when everybody was still using all the, like, one use plastic bags. Like, you just had a plastic bag that's full of plastic bags. So we've just replaced that with. Yeah.

Johnny 15:29

And they're actually, like, decaying, so. Yeah, I guess they're not biodegradable, but they're not forever. Yeah, they're not useful forever, but yeah. And so the other field notes that came out was a really big deal. So. Robert McFarlane is a British writer who Uses field notes. And when his book. Oh, my God, I'm gonna miss it. Underlands came out.

Andy 15:51

Oh, it's that guy. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.

Johnny 15:52

A couple years ago, he had a really cool cover, and they did a field notes edition.

Andy 15:56

Okay. I didn't make that connection, but, yeah, that was a. The Underland Underworld. Underbrush. Underland. Oh, man, I should know that one. Yeah. Like, gorgeous cover.

Johnny 16:05

Oh, good. Yeah, it was perfect. And it's been a while. That was like, 2018. 2019.

Andy 16:12

Yeah.

Johnny 16:12

I think it was before the pandemic. So he's working on another book that's called Is a River Alive. That is about everything, apparently. And they sent out an. Or. He put out a notice that if there were some independent bookstores where you could order it ahead of time and get a signed copy and field notes that matches. So that's what I did. Oh, wow. Not knowing. Yeah, they were coming out as the edition.

Andy 16:38

Yeah.

Johnny 16:39

So the new edition has three books, and one is the American cover, one's the British cover, and one is, like, effect simile of the art that they

Andy 16:50

based it on with a bri. Did you see that little.

Johnny 16:54

Yeah, that made me feel.

Andy 16:56

Little Norris pencil in the front. That's interesting. So, wait, one is the US Cover, and one is the British cover. I'm looking at this and, like, the basic difference is that one has another shade of darker blue in it. Is that just the difference?

Johnny 17:11

Yep. Apparently the artist created linocut and just made all these different colors, and they picked two.

Andy 17:18

Okay. It's interesting that they would have.

Johnny 17:21

That's so cool.

Andy 17:22

Yeah. Yeah, it's gorgeous. I love the. And another thing I like about these notebooks is it has, like, a selective uv, like, glossy coating on it. So it really kind of gives it some texture the way it sort of

Johnny 17:34

goes through the letters. Like, this one is, like, really awesome.

Andy 17:38

Yeah.

Johnny 17:39

So I'm not upset about having an extra one.

Andy 17:41

Yeah.

Johnny 17:41

Even though I spent a lot of money to get it shipped late. But the subscriber extra was a map from Fisk of. Oh, my God, when was it from? 40s. Yeah, 40s, 50s. Of. Of the Mississippi, which was really cool. Yeah. And they did phone backgrounds of that map, and I think some of the covers.

Andy 18:02

Yeah.

Johnny 18:02

But they were supposed to be in the. Your shipping email, so I have to email them because I'm a dork and I want that. But yeah, these were just, like, phenomenal. They're so pretty.

Andy 18:12

Yeah.

Johnny 18:13

And Mr. McFarland is in the US and he's on the east coast next week. He'll be in Washington and the next day in Cambridge at my favorite bookstore and the next day in Concord. I'm like, how much of a fanboy am I like, looking at your schedules. But I'll be up in two weeks.

Andy 18:31

Go find them and take your phone and record a, an interview for like,

Johnny 18:36

oh, you're the greatest. Like, he's, he's really like, he's a cool guy. My. Yeah, my brother and I gave each other his books once for Christmas and I posted a selfie and he sent me a message like I was having a bad week. This was a nice pick me up. Like, that's awesome. Like you pick me up every day.

Andy 18:53

The last time we had a British author on the show, it went really well.

Johnny 18:56

So I stole a book. But yeah, I don't think he listens to our podcast all the time. I've been working on a book since then, but I don't know how to make a soft cover book. So I made a lot of screw ups.

Andy 19:09

But I think, yeah, I'm sure, I'm sure Rollie listens to the show just like as soon as it comes out. So. Hey, Rolly.

Johnny 19:17

And so the last thing was they do field notes, does a, an artist designed subscriber box every year. So your first shipment always comes in whatever that box is. And mine was up this time and I don't know if it's gonna show up, but it just features pencil sharpeners all over it. Like some Victorian age ones, those really cool curved German ones.

Andy 19:41

Something I have, they have the Janus in there, which is one of my favorites that I could never make work really well.

Johnny 19:46

They have the Kum longpoint on the, on the front.

Andy 19:49

Oh, cool.

Johnny 19:50

Makes me so happy. Any of these would be a great tattoo.

Andy 19:53

Yeah. But did you see, did you see the, like in the article about that box? They had like a, like a, a link to the artists. Like he wrote a substack with all of his pencil sharpen, his pencil sharpener collection. I'll put the link in the show notes. But yeah, it's really cool. Like he. That dude has hundreds of pencil sharpeners and he has them arranged very nicely too. Like it looks like it's one of those old type, like type boxes, hot type boxes.

Johnny 20:19

And that is so cool.

Andy 20:21

Yeah.

Johnny 20:22

Yeah, it's that his house smells really good.

Andy 20:25

Yeah.

Johnny 20:26

Like brass and cedar.

Andy 20:28

Yeah.

Johnny 20:30

Yeah. So I guess I only have one more fresh point. I don't know if folks follow what narwhal does with their fountain pens these days, but they. We Talked about the titanium one, which was a version of the Nautilus where they made the cap flush with the body and they replaced that awful clip with one that is beautiful and works really well. So I think it's Endless Pens and Hatch. I don't know what the relationship is, but you buy them from Endless Pens. They did one called Verdigris, that is that style and resin with rose Gold Appointments. And it's like, so pretty. I just looked at the custom box for a couple days. Like, I don't know what to put in it.

Andy 21:09

What are the appointment. What are appointments?

Johnny 21:11

Oh, like the hardware and the nib.

Andy 21:12

Oh, cool.

Johnny 21:13

And the little, I guess, ink windows.

Andy 21:17

I see. Yeah.

Johnny 21:18

So, yeah, I put Giroban Vertigree in it because. Had to. No, it's not actually that good of a match, but it's good.

Andy 21:25

You put the Vertigree in the Verdigris.

Johnny 21:29

They've redone two of their black pens with that, so maybe they're switching designs, which would be cool.

Andy 21:35

Yeah, that's really cool.

Johnny 21:37

Yeah. And we're waiting to see if they come up with a new pride pen this year because last year they came out with two and they were really cool.

Andy 21:44

And depends, do they get federal funding? Yeah, they left, so we don't cry.

Johnny 21:51

Yeah, I do it constantly.

Andy 21:55

Yeah.

Johnny 21:56

But that is my end.

Andy 21:59

Okay. Yeah. I just have a few things to talk about. The first one, I'll mention kind of the. The last roundup of the. Just, just the new things that came out. And that is the new Blackwing. You know, we all. We all got a. The notice. It was Blackwing140. And like, this is the quarterly edition Black Wing. I mean, and I guess so it's interesting. Sometimes I feel like they send out the non California orders first, and then people get theirs like a few days before me. And sometimes they just send them all out first. And because I'm not that far from Stockton, I get like a couple days, usually a couple days before others. So this came in, I think, on Saturday. And yeah, it is the Blackwing 140. And I'm holding it up right now. And it is bright, bright silver. And what's interesting about it is that this is a different silver than on the paint on the, like, Black Wing Labs. So for the. The silver ink, like, this is a much sort of shinier kind of shinier. I don't know if you can see this in the, like in the view, but it's like more of a mirror finish than. Than this one. And so what it's Trying to do. It's the culinary pencil, and it is all silver. The paint is silver. The ferrule of silver, like, has kind of a gray silvery eraser. And it is, I guess, 140 is the Celsius temperature for the Maillard reaction, which is when things start to, like, caramelize and form, like, a crust and things like that. It's like when things happen, like in cooking, it's. It's at that point. So this is stainless steel because of, like, commercial kitchens are typically stainless steel. I mean, this isn't stainless steel. Stainless steel colored because of, like, it's

Johnny 23:34

hail on your shirt.

Andy 23:35

Yeah, it's very, very, very firm if it's stainless steel. So, yeah, it is. It's gorgeous. I. You know, these are my favorite kind. The ones that are just a very simple sort of execution of a theme. The. I think the last one that I liked this much was like the Golden Gate Bridge 1. Just very simple, no wrap. You know, this is just the paint job. And what I like is I haven't actually. I need to dig out my. My collection. But, you know, I. The Philadelphia Museum of Art pencil black wing that they came up with was just like, full gold. Just everything was gold. And then we had the coffee pencil last. Last year, two years ago, whenever that came out.

Johnny 24:11

And it's been a while.

Andy 24:12

Yeah, that's like copper, because, like a copper pot. And so we have a silver and gold and copper pen, like black wings now, which is fun. So that could be fun to play around with the, you know, the erasers in there. So. Yeah, that is the culinary pencil. It's a. It's a balanced graphite. So it's the pearl graphite, which isn't my favorite, but it's not terrible. It's fine. It. Yeah, just looks. Looks really good. Good job. Good job. Black one on that one.

Johnny 24:36

Did they make a recipe book?

Andy 24:38

No, they. I actually, yeah, the subscriber extras. You know, I. I don't like to complain about subscriber extras because they're just. That they're an extra, but they're just kind of like. I. They phoned in a little bit, and they were busy with the labs, but they're essentially. You get three of these, like, little note cards that has, like, kind of a structured recipe thing on the front, but, like, it's hard to see in this. In this video. But, like, wow. You have to write real tiny if you want to, like, actually use the sort of ingredients in the directions list. And then on the back, there's like, a A storyboard thing. Story. Visual sections for story sections for visual sections for notes. I didn't read the, the email too carefully so I don't really know what this, this is for. It's fine. I'm not going to use these. I'm probably going to throw them away.

Johnny 25:23

Blowing up to a five, that'd be a lot more useful.

Andy 25:25

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm not quite sure where you are supposed to put them in but like also the only, the top corner, only one top corner is rounded. The rest of it is sharp and I'm not quite sure what that's four.

Johnny 25:38

Okay. I don't know why, but I like that.

Andy 25:40

Okay, that's good. If you want some extra ones, I'll send them to you. Yeah, so not huge on that but that would have, would have been fun if they had like a little recipe book. But yeah, I get it.

Johnny 25:52

Yeah, maybe they will.

Andy 25:54

Yeah. So yeah, that is, that's the black wing. One thing I wanted to mention is in, gosh, two and a half weeks I am going to Europe for a few days. So I'm doing a conference talk in London. It's a content design leadership conference. So it's basically the job that I have. I'm going to be talking about like burnout and moving from like being a manager to we call it an ic, an individual contributor which is basically like a non manager role. So I'll be doing and talk about that. But I. It's been 10 years since I've been in London but I went to like Choosing Keeping and Present correct and like some of the cool stores so I'm going to go back to those. I'm going to spoiler hung out with. Gosh, my brain is not working. Noah from Maker's Cabinet when he was in town and actually going to go hang out with him in London and get a tour of the Maker's Cabinet space.

Johnny 26:43

Oh, that's awesome.

Andy 26:44

And I'm going to. I'm. I'm not quite sure what form it'll take yet but I'm going to try to record some video and maybe a little walkthrough and maybe some of that will make it into the show and some of it will be a Patreon extra but like kind of check out some of the like in my head the Maker's Cabinet space is just like this old sort of like Da Vinci workshop with all these things around and like really fancy brass things all over the place. I have no idea what it's actually like but that would be cool. So going to take a little tour of that. And then I would love any stationery recommendations that folks have for London and Paris because after London, I'm going to go to Paris for about five days and never been to Paris, but there's some really cool stationery shops there. I can probably find some. But I would love any recommendations people have. So unfortunately I am not on in the Facebook group, but I. A, I'm in the discord and then B, feel free to drop me an email. That's andyoodclinch.com I'll definitely share any shops that I get to go to. But if you have any shop recommendations, would love to hear those then. Also, like any interesting Parisian or French stationery items that seems like I should be picking up. So definitely going to see if there's any interesting, like Bic products that are just like special to France. Like I have some of the like translucent like yellow viros. Right. Like, like that they have.

Johnny 28:03

Have you seen the fountain pen that loads like a shotgun?

Andy 28:07

No.

Johnny 28:08

I found one on ebay. I'm waiting for it to show up. It like, it's hard to describe. It looks like a. A short, fat, big crystal and the body sort of opens like a breech load shotgun. And that's how you take out the cartridge and you put it back in.

Andy 28:22

Bic makes this. Do they currently make it or is it like antique? Really? Okay, well, I'm gonna look for that.

Johnny 28:29

Find them on Amazon, like, but you'll pay a lot. But it's like you can't pick your color. Like some of them are kind of ugly. I don't want them.

Andy 28:36

Yeah. Okay. Interesting.

Johnny 28:39

You probably find at a grocery store.

Andy 28:41

Yeah, that's my favorite kind of like. Yeah, those are my favorite kind of finds.

Johnny 28:45

Right.

Andy 28:45

Like just the pedestrian stuff that like. Yeah. So definitely would love recommendations for that. Yeah. And if there's any like, interesting. I know that Johnny, you have a love for those kind of like vintage French, like school book, school notebooks out there. So maybe if I can find like, if I can find me a, like a antique store, maybe that would be something that shows up there. But yeah, I don't know what they

Johnny 29:10

put in their paper, but it's. It retains this quality and smells amazing.

Andy 29:14

Yeah. There's a certain je ne sais quoi in that paper.

Johnny 29:18

Sure.

Andy 29:18

Yeah. Also, my French is real bad, so I'm probably going to start an international incident.

Johnny 29:23

You call Owen. Owen's very advanced in French.

Andy 29:26

Okay. Can you come and be my translator? That would be.

Johnny 29:30

You would jump.

Andy 29:32

Erica's Erica's pretty good at French. Like, she grew up in Canada, so, like, she wouldn't grow up in, like, the francophone areas. But, like, you know, she knows enough French to kind of get by, so that should be good. So I'm gonna eat all the pastries Coffer told me about. Apparently there's some really good pand raisins out there. I don't know how to say it in French, but, like, raisin bread. So definitely gonna get some raisin croissants. Yeah. So if we hopefully. Yeah, maybe we can record before I go. But if we don't definitely have some so. And tell for when I. When I get back.

Johnny 30:02

I think I'll be in Boston when you're away.

Andy 30:05

Okay.

Johnny 30:05

Much less glamorous, but they have Bob Slate.

Andy 30:08

Yeah, I mean, Boston's still great too, so I've never been. I would like to go to Boston.

Johnny 30:12

We should do a stationary and erasable meet up there officially.

Andy 30:16

Hey, ask the Bob Slate people if we can, like, borrow back room and do a recording there.

Johnny 30:21

So I tried to talk the lady there into being on her podcast, and I lost her business card.

Andy 30:26

Oh, no.

Johnny 30:28

So I don't know if she'll remember that. I tried to talk her into it and she.

Andy 30:32

I don't know.

Johnny 30:33

I hope it can work. Yeah.

Andy 30:36

Last thing I want to mention is just an update on merch stuff. I talked about both of these things last episode, but we have some, like, official things that are, like, up now. So the little erasable lapel pins, the eraser friends. I have, like, little cool, like, pin cards for them, and they're all bagged up and ready to ship out. I don't know if you. I think I got this since I sent Johnny, you and Tim the samples, but I found out on Amazon you can just buy, like, different color of pinbacks. The little rubber clutch for the back.

Johnny 31:10

Oh, neat.

Andy 31:11

And so I was like, what the heck? These are so cheap. So I bought, like, a yellow one and a pink one and to make just, like, little pencil colors. So the backs have those.

Johnny 31:21

I'm a pin on the jean jacket guy. So I have those locking ones.

Andy 31:24

Oh, the locking ones are. Yeah.

Johnny 31:27

After I put them on, I'm like, crap. It really needs to be washed.

Andy 31:33

So if you missed the last episode, these are little, like, inch and a half long erasers that say the erasable podcast has a little smiley face on it. This is designed by Betsy Streeter, who's a friend of mine, and we were just kind of talking one day about, like, how we used to draw little smiley faces on our erasers to make little friends. And so she was like, she illustrated. And I was like, hey, can we make a Patreon of this? So send it out to all of our patreon members at $10 a month or more. You probably already got those. But anybody if you are a $5 a month subscriber, one of the things we try to do is give you little, like, discounts and stuff. So if you subscribe at A$5 a month, you can get a coupon code to buy this for essentially half off. So get yourself a little. Erase the lapel pin. But also it's just up on our website, on the little, little store for sale. So we've already had a. I haven't even talked about this at all, and we've already had quite a few sales. So, yeah, you can buy this there. Yeah, just a fun little new thing. We haven't done a. We haven't done a lapel pin in like eight years. So I just, I just found the other day I have one. One left that I can find and I have like the little erasable logo lapel pen, which was a real bear to make because they put this post on wrong and at first so had to send them back and get them again. So, yeah, get yourself one of these. We also have. Oh, if you go to erasable Us Friend, it's the like, little product page for this thing. Also. I have. Yeah, Johnny just put his on his head. Little embroidered erasable podcast logo caps that are baseball caps. They're corduroy. Even though they're corduroy, they're still pretty lightweight. Yep. Good for the summer. They come in sort of a reddish burgundy color. They come in. Johnny's wearing one that is olive, but I think it's more gray than it is green.

Johnny 33:18

Yeah, definitely.

Andy 33:19

Yeah. And this one is navy. And I think there's also a black one that I don't have one on hand, but this is the classic logo. And the two colors with the. With the red banner and just sort of a white pencil behind it. Yeah, it looks really nice as a hat. I've actually twice worn this out in the world and people are like, oh, what's that? It's like, that's my podcast. Just that asshole who has a hat for his own podcast.

Johnny 33:42

I was wearing mine doing some gardening on the balcony recently because. To cover up my giant forehead.

Andy 33:49

So I will. I'll say a quick thing about the pricing. They're $30, and that is mostly because kind of costs us a lot to make and I needed to make a little bit more. Like I wish, I wish this thing was a little bit cheaper, like 5$10 cheaper. But I think it's because, like there's a fee for like the hat itself and for the embroidery and stuff like that. But it is a, it is really nice quality. And if you order on our website, they come straight from the factory. So basically that connects to Printful, which is the company that makes this, the vendor and they, they make it and send it right to you. So, and I, I'm pretty sure if you're overseas, I think that they have printing locations in Europe and in Canada, so you don't have to deal with whatever the heck tariffs there are in the world. Yeah, not, not 100% sure of that, but I think that's the case. It's a little difficult to set up, but yeah, it should be pretty seamless from, you know, from your end of it. So if you want a nice little hat order that I would love to know from folks, I've been trying to be very, instead of just like plastering our logo on all the things, I've just been trying to be really selective. And so if anybody out here, out there has feedback with stuff that they would love to like have a little erasable podcast logo on, like let me know, like we have little winter hats that you can do. There's baseball caps that are not corduroy. There's like snapback cats if caps. If you want something that's a little bit more trendy. There's like those foam trucker caps if you want to have it very like kind of draplin esque. I think that one is maybe screen print instead of embroidery though. So I would probably like put maybe like a full color logo or something like that on there.

Johnny 35:19

So do they do aprons?

Andy 35:22

Ooh, I don't know. That'd be fun.

Johnny 35:24

Yeah, my shop apron is nicer than most of my clothes. So it's spotless because I'm really careful when I wear it. But I probably should have a real apron.

Andy 35:33

Oh, an apron. Yeah, I could use an apron, but yeah, I want to save on just like random swag waste. Like I work in tech and there's just so much swag that it's just like just filling landfills. So I want to be really intentional and I want to do stuff that people actually just want to wear. And so I'm not going to like plaster this all over everything. But I think it'd be fun to Have a couple cool little items. So. So yeah, that's erasable.com hat. Or if you go to erasable.com. excuse me, not dot com. Us. Erasable us. Slash shop. You can see these. Somebody ordered. I apparently I still have in the shop. Remember that podcast I had called Dot Grid? I still have stickers for that in the shop. Really? And somebody orders them. I was like, oh, shoot, now I have to find these stickers. And I did, thank goodness. So I shipped those out. We have some erasable logo stickers in there. I have I think three, still three issues of Plumbago that's in the shop that you can buy the collector's issue, the travel and nature issue, and then the. The last issue that we made, the little small pocket one. Oh, that's the tin. The tiny issue. So yeah, got those in the shop. Yeah. Have your fun. This, this proceeds from this mostly just goes to like hosting costs and keeping the lights on and occasionally like equipment upgrades and stuff like that. So when Tim's microphone bites the dust, we can just like pull from the coffers.

Johnny 36:54

And I think mine was the most recent victim.

Andy 36:59

Yeah, yours is. I didn't realize you have like a little light inside that microphone.

Johnny 37:03

Yeah, it's. It's romantic.

Andy 37:05

Yeah.

Johnny 37:06

Just by cobalt blue.

Andy 37:07

Just by microphone light. Yeah. So yeah, that's about it. Any kind of last minute things we want to talk about, Johnny?

Johnny 37:14

Oh, I don't know if we mentioned. We mentioned this last time, but. Right. Notepads is no longer doing their.

Andy 37:19

That's right. That's right.

Johnny 37:21

So if I understand right, most of their business was like large orders of custom notebooks. So that's what they're still going to do, but they're not going to sell on the retail side anymore.

Andy 37:32

That's too bad.

Johnny 37:33

So they had a bonkers sale and I restrained myself. I bought a couple things, but last time I looked, they still had a lot of the hard case or the hardcover. A5 notebooks for just buy a couple bucks to start with and they're 40% off.

Andy 37:50

Okay.

Johnny 37:51

I try not to buy anything I can make, but I can't make reporter notebooks.

Andy 37:55

Yeah. So if. So if write notepads is like going to keep on doing like corporate sales. Could I potentially like still buy those notebooks with like, if I order them in bulk with a company logo on it?

Johnny 38:09

Yeah. Okay.

Andy 38:10

I've been trying to get. So the startup I work at, like, we're not very good at making swag. Like we tend to make just like really junky T shirts and stuff. And I've been trying to convince them to, like, make some custom black wings or do some cool notebooks, and I think that would be a really neat. Really neat notebook. So, yeah, I might try to talk. Talk somebody there into that, but concentrate on one thing. Yeah.

Johnny 38:32

I can't imagine, like, being pulled.

Andy 38:35

Yeah.

Johnny 38:35

A little while they had, like, shop window open.

Andy 38:38

Yeah. Well, I remember, like, I loved. Loved their quarterly editions, but I also know that that was a big time in strain on Chris and Mose and everybody. So, like, I'm. I'm glad that, yeah, they're taking a break, but, yeah, I'll miss those. Miss the right notepad stuff.

Johnny 38:57

Sad face.

Andy 38:59

Yeah.

Johnny 39:00

And I don't have a very large stash of them.

Andy 39:04

Time to buy some more.

Johnny 39:05

I thought they'd be around forever.

Andy 39:07

Yeah. Just take. Take it for granted. Cool. Well, yeah, we can probably. Probably button it up. I. I guess we haven't done a real kind of like, full endnote read for a while, but if. If y' all want to kind of engage with the podcast on various channels, we do still have a Facebook page and an Instagram page, which are. It's whatever. Facebook.com Instagram.com erasablepodcast still have a erasable group that I tragically am not in anymore because I gave up Facebook earlier this year. But I imagine it's still going strong. I actually really missed that group for when I was asking for, like, shop recommendations because I can't just, like, slide in there and do that anymore. But that is erasable. Excuse me. Facebook.comgroups/erasable. Technically, we still have an X account, but I don't think any of us are looking at that. I probably wouldn't try to get a story. Yeah, if you're. If you're a hipster, come on over to Bluesky. We're at Erasable podcast on Blue sky, and I don't update that much. Gosh, we're real bad at this. I think Instagram is mainly our thing. But also, if you want to check out this episode with the audio file and show notes and things like that, it's erasable U.S. 226. This is episode 226. And of course, we're on Discord, which is a new thing that I'm trying out. I'm also not very good about checking that out. But if you want a little community that isn't owned by a billionaire yet, I think it's just a matter of yet. No, seriously yet. Little chat app. It's erasable us/discord d I S C O R D and we'll have a, like a little invite link or something there. So yeah, check us out there. We're also on Patreon Patreon us. Excuse me, patreon.com erasable. I think I also have erasable us/patreon set up to forward to it. But if you subscribe at any level, you can see this video, a video of our episodes. You can see some extras. Like sometimes we do a pen podcast. We should do one of those soon. And if you subscribe at the $10 a month level, sometimes once a year we send you a little piece of swag, which is fun and do some cool stuff. So like this little erasable pin. So I think we're done sending this out for this year. But if you subscribe at the $10 level, check it out next spring we'll do another cool thing. Another thing we do for folks who subscribe that level is we read your name at the end of the show, which is what we will do here. So actually, real quick, before we do that, Johnny, where can people find you on the Internet and your in your

Johnny 41:31

wares@Pence Revolution.com, which is newly designed and has like information and even a headshot.

Andy 41:38

Is there still a blog? Like, can you go read your blog post there too? Or is that not a thing anymore?

Johnny 41:43

So I backed it up and tried to import it into Blogger and they thought it was spam.

Andy 41:47

Oh.

Johnny 41:48

So I think I have it buried in my email somewhere. I could probably resurrect it. But yeah, man, a lot of it's really dated at this point because it would. It goes back almost 20 years.

Andy 41:59

Yeah, some of that is good though. Like I, I still read like I was looking up the black polymer 999 and like I just found a bunch of old pencil talk posts. And I mean, Stephen Silk sometimes updates, but like just a lot of pencil talk stuff and yeah, that's. It's handy to have that around. Woodclinch is still up and people keep, keep hitting it. Like, I haven't, I haven't updated in like two years. So.

Johnny 42:22

Yeah, one of the reasons I switched to Squarespace is because I wanted to do some blog updates, but most of it probably be about book mining, which is just great.

Andy 42:30

Yeah. And are you on any socials anymore or are you just.

Johnny 42:34

I mean, I update Instagram at Pennsolution, but like, I really feel like I don't know how to use it. Right. Like, I just figured out reels this Morning, literally. But now I figured it out, so.

Andy 42:47

Okay. With that, I need to. Well, we'll take this offline, but maybe you can make us some, like, reels or some stories about, like, the new erasable swag or something to. Yeah, yeah, get that out there. Yeah. Well, I am on a few social media sites. None of them are very big, so I'm trying to, like, limit my usage. So Mon Blue sky and Mastodon. And there's one that I've been playing around with called Pixel Fed, which is like Mastodon, but for, like, Instagram Y kind of stuff. So if you go to my website, Andy, wtf? There's links to all of that there. You can check that out. And I have a blog called Asterisms, which is Asterisms. Lol. My blog address. I'm trying to update that. Mostly not about pencil stuff, but. Yeah, that's where you can find us. Okay. Yeah, let's talk about. Let's thank our patrons. So big thank you to all the folks who support us at A$10 a month level or more. You can also do annual plans, which gives you a little bit of a discount. And that those people are Chris Berry, Mikhail Tuzikoff, John Scher, Ellen Dana Morris, Melissa Miller, Angie Aaron Bollinger, Ida Umphers, David Johnson, Tana Feliz, JAFX in the Midwest or JFX in the Midwest. And Sipe Krismetzkas, Mary Collis, Phil Munson, Valerie Drew, Tom Kely, Andre Torres, Paul Moorhead, William Modlin, John Capal, Capelli, Stephen Fali. Which, by the way, I need to get Stephen to tell me the actual pronunciation of his last name, because the three of us pronounce it differently from each other.

Johnny 44:25

Yeah.

Andy 44:25

Steven S. Aaron Willard, Millie Blackwell, Michael d', Alosa, Kathy. Kathy Rogers, Dr. Hans Niddleman, and John Wood. Thank you all for supporting the show and we will see you next time, hopefully with all three of us in tow. Do you like our podcast? Most people like our podcast, but if you like our podcast, David will turn it off.
